Multilayer Pipe Producers - Situation 2002

Due To Popular Demand - Multilayer, A Phenomenon Scrutinised:

KWD-globalpipe, 2002-35. Look at the incredible rise of PE-Al-PE multilayer pipes in Plumbing & Heating over the past few years and you’ll be justifiably impressed. The more striking, then, is the fact that this achievement is not equally shared between the product’s manufacturers. Whereas around half of the 20 manufacturers thrive and expand the other half find it difficult to even keep their production capacity more or less busy. Some quite incredibly even go out of business. +++
A closer look draws an even gloomier picture :

  • the top 4 manufacturers cover over 60% of the European market,
  • another 4 manufactuerers enjoy a rather secure position and
  • the last 12 fight over the remaining 12% of the market.

A one-percent share of the market, however, means a paltry 2 m metres when a multilayer line needs at least 4 m metres to turn a profit. It does not take a finicky controller to find out that one needs at least 3 lines to produce a complete range of sizes economically. +++
Apart from UNIPIPE who make their own extruders which use a special welding technique and who have lots of experience with PE-MD inliners, manufacturers find themselves faced with the need for further investment. Recent trends show a clear move towards electronically cross-linked inliners at the expense of the hitherto more popular Silane method. Golan, Henco, and Hewing own their own irradiation plants and independent cross-linkers such as BGS and Studer have mightily up-graded their facilities, also regarding large sizes and up to 12 metres length. +++
In the core markets Austria, Germany, and Switzerland the building activity is in the doldrums and the substitution of other materials does not make up for slowing turnover. Even those few countries where building still expands don’t show an increase in the sales of multilayer as welded systems make inroads over expensive crimp systems. +++
Growth potential can still be found in export, though. North, East, and South Europe offer possibilities for those manufacturers who have built a portfolio of approvals over the years. An investment of around EUR 1,5 - 2 m will open over a dozen markets although export markets are not unlimited. Top quality pipe may well be sold into China for another few years but Korea and Turkey, among others, can stifle any attempt at selling into their markets by their own manufacturers’ extremely low prices. +++
Future expansion within Europe will largely depend on each manufacturer’s ability of finding new ways of distribution, or of making their product range more attractive, or both.

Pipe Materials

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

After copper- ,iron und various plastic pipes (PP-R, PB and PEX) now multilayer pipes are conquering the world of hot and cold water systems (inhouse).

5 layer pipe for hot and cold systems with an Aluminum diffusion barrier layer. A bonding agent is applied on the PE-RT or PE-X inner pipe. The Aluminum layer is then either butt welded or welded with overlap. After the second bonding layer has been put on, the outer PE pipe is extruded. As pipe joints clamping, sliding or compression sleeves can be used. The pipe is perfectly gas and oxygen tight.

These expressions are used synonymously for multilayer pipes:

  • Sandwich Tube / Pipe – not very popular, only used for water, sewage and district heating
  • Plastic – Aluminium – Plastic (PAP) but also Composite Pipes is predominantly used in the Asian countries.
  • Multilayer Pipes or Metal-Plastic Multilayer Pipes is the typical name in Europe, Middle East and North America.

The current norm/standard definition according to ISO CD 21003

knows M-type and P-type:

M-Type=Multilayer Metal Pipes:

  • PEX+AL+PEX+Adhesives
  • PE-RT + AL + PE-RT – Adhesives
  • other combinations

P-Type = Multilayer Plastic Pipes:

  • PEX + Adhesives + EVOH etc
  • PE-RT + Adhesives + EVOH etc
  • Other combinations

PP-R/AL Composite pipes are not multilayer pipes according to ISO CD 21003 because the pipes are only sticked and not welded (connection by welding or connection by adhesives is demanded).

Pipe Machinery

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

With beginning of the year 2008, nearly 300 Multilayer Pipe Production Lines are running. From these we find

  • about 120 in Europe
  • 120 in China and
  • 60 in other countries.

It is not possible to compare production capacities per line by country. Chinese multilayer pipe lines produce about 2,5 to 3,5 Mio m/year. A modern European multilayer pipe line can have a capacity of more than 7 Mio m/year (if they run it continuously).
There are some companies of the starting time, that have quit the production of Multilayer Pipe Lines. For example: Swisscab, Unicor , Krupp-Reifenhäuser und APSwisstech.

Today the most important Producers of Mulitlayer Pipe Lines are:

  • Maillefer-Dreistern/CH
  • Battenfeld Extrusion-Templet/D
  • Cincinnati Extrusion-Nexans/A
  • Chase Machinery/PRC
  • Advance Tech/PRC
  • as well as the specialist an particular parts THE /CH
  • and other Chinese and Russian companies.

Some of the largest manufacturer (pipes and profiles) like Uponor, Rehau, Henco a.s.o. only buy the parts of the extrusion lines and build it together by themselves.

Fittings & Tools

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Usually each Fitting for Multilayer Pipe Installations has its own crimping jaw profiles. So we know 20 different crimp sleeves. Up to date only Fränkische offers fittings, that can be crimped with five different crimping jaw profiles (F, U, TH, H and VP).

Standardisation

Common Relevance, Tasks and Intention of Standardisation

Standardisation stands for cost reduction! Research and developement relies on general conditions. Standards are the contractual basis and the link between clients, companies and distributors. Tasks of Standardisation are reduction of trade barriers and creation of similar conditions for everyone. Intention is the harmonisation of national standards and impleme ntation of european and international standards.

European Acceptance Scheme for water pipes, taps and fittings

Construction products such as pipes, fittings, taps and meters that are in contact with drinking water are covered by the Construction Products Directive (89/106/EC). Even so, manufacturers still face a variety of different national regulations. These result in significant regulatory trade barriers when they try to sell their wares across the Union. At the same time, these products must allow the drinking water distributed by the supply networks to satisfy the quality requirements of the Drinking Water Directive (98/83/EC).
The European Commission is working closely with national authorities to establish a common European regulatory approach for construction products in contact with drinking water. This is designed to achieve a single market for these items by abolishing trade barriers. An interim report from the Member States’ regulators has already been published for public consultation.
An extensive research programme is now under way to solve some of the unanswered questions and secure a convergence of views among national regulators. The project is being carried out by 15 experienced laboratories in 10 Member States and coordinated by the Commission’s Joint Research Centre. more

Multilayer – What kind of Standard

  • 3 Layer pipes are fixed in the based material Standard (e.g.EN ISO 15875 PEX)
  • 5 Layer pipes are fixed in the ISO DIS 21003 ff
  • Multilayer Pipes / M+P Piepes ISO DIS 21003
  • Multilayer pipes — Polyolefin-Aluminium Multilayer pipes — M-Pipes / General DIN 16836
  • Multilayer pipes — Polyolefin Multilayer pipes — General P-Pipes DIN 16837
