Common Relevance, Tasks and Intention of Standardisation

Standardisation stands for cost reduction! Research and developement relies on general conditions. Standards are the contractual basis and the link between clients, companies and distributors. Tasks of Standardisation are reduction of trade barriers and creation of similar conditions for everyone. Intention is the harmonisation of national standards and impleme ntation of european and international standards.

European Acceptance Scheme for water pipes, taps and fittings

Construction products such as pipes, fittings, taps and meters that are in contact with drinking water are covered by the Construction Products Directive (89/106/EC). Even so, manufacturers still face a variety of different national regulations. These result in significant regulatory trade barriers when they try to sell their wares across the Union. At the same time, these products must allow the drinking water distributed by the supply networks to satisfy the quality requirements of the Drinking Water Directive (98/83/EC).
The European Commission is working closely with national authorities to establish a common European regulatory approach for construction products in contact with drinking water. This is designed to achieve a single market for these items by abolishing trade barriers. An interim report from the Member States’ regulators has already been published for public consultation.
An extensive research programme is now under way to solve some of the unanswered questions and secure a convergence of views among national regulators. The project is being carried out by 15 experienced laboratories in 10 Member States and coordinated by the Commission’s Joint Research Centre. more
